BATTING
THE HEDGES
: Cool
things happen on Saturday nightsthis we
assume. What we dont necessarily assume
is that cool things happen at Center Stage Theater,
atop the frivolries of Paseo Nuevos substructure.
Indeed, last Saturday, an enterprising coterie
of eccentricity-minded rockers attacked the
Center Stage, releasing a quirky sound thats
sure to ensure the venue will either be booked
for weekends to come, or establish a no-rock
policy for years to come. Suspicions aside,
A Silk Hedge headlined a truly unique Santa
Barbara underground sort of show last weekend,
laying down its keyboard-y, Lance Parker-icious
tunes to a dancing semblance of fans. Opening
was Justin Rhodes, Zach Madden, and The Spires,
and the beer/wine was entirely free, once past
the $5 cover charge. Wait?! $5 = wine and beer
and good bands?? Not a typo, we swear, for a
new venue for rock music has landed. In any
case, the Hedge boys were excellently fresh,
singing about such diversions as model airplane
glue as the crowd bobbed its heads in delight.
We want more, both from band and venue. Matt
