The Neighbor's Kid
by Justin Matthew Dullum
Fueled by grainy family photos found in the recycling, common household objects, households, old friends, older neighborhoods and the simultaneous optimism and pessimism one must experience to give blood, The Neighbor's Kid is an attempt to explore commonplace in an unfamiliar way.
This release is both a culmination of methods and sketches Dullum experimented with on his previous three albums plus sounds that hint at a new direction. This direction has yet to be officially discovered (it is either a new note after "F" or a physical direction somewhere between East and West but neither North or South - perhaps Wouth Neast?). Still, acoustic and synthesized instrumental figures built around a pop and folk sensibility, with an emphasis on vocal harmonies, beating things with pencils, the invaluable Rhythm Tech Fruit Shaker series, Astrovans, and a mocking bird put on Earth specifically to torture Dullum’s living soul all must be leading up to something.
